Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Cancelled Predecessor
Dynasty Warriors: Origins, launching January 17, 2025, boasts exhilarating hack-and-slash combat set against the backdrop of China's Three Kingdoms period. However, the game's creation involved a surprising twist: the cancellation of its planned 10th mainline installment.
Omega Force, the development studio, revealed in an interview with 4Gamer (translated by SiliconEra) that technological advancements spurred this pivotal decision. The team, initially working on Dynasty Warriors 10, a stage-clearing title reminiscent of Dynasty Warriors 7, scrapped the project after witnessing the potential of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles. The shift allowed for a more modern, strategically-rich experience.
The decision, while difficult, wasn't without benefit. Producer Tomohiko Sho emphasized the impact of next-gen console capabilities in reshaping their approach. Key elements from the abandoned Dynasty Warriors 10, including the free-roaming map and a more in-depth Three Kingdoms narrative, found their way into Origins. Producer Masamichi Oba highlighted the bittersweet nature of this transition, acknowledging the loss of the previous project while celebrating the integration of its best features. The result is a game that leverages modern technology to deliver an enhanced Dynasty Warriors experience.
