EA's Skate Gets Microtransactions Before Its Release Date

by Max Mar 19,2025

EA's highly anticipated Skate revival is incorporating microtransactions into its latest alpha test, a move that precedes the official release date announcement. As reported by Insider Gaming, developer Full Circle has introduced a virtual currency, San Van Bucks, used to purchase cosmetic items. This alpha test appears designed to gauge player response to the microtransaction system, with Full Circle aiming for a "positive experience when purchasing items from the Skate store." The developer's message to testers emphasizes the importance of feedback for improving the early access launch experience.

Full Circle has alerted testers that all progress will be reset before the early access launch, and any purchases made during the alpha will be refunded as San Van Bucks, redeemable upon early access launch.

Skate's early access launch is slated for 2025. Initially announced during EA Play in 2020 as being in very early development, Full Circle has maintained consistent communication with the community through closed playtests and updates via their "The Board Room" video series. The official game title, simply "skate," was revealed in 2022, along with confirmation of its free-to-play release on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
