Sony’s CES 2025 presentation unveiled some surprising movie and TV adaptations, including a film based on the popular PlayStation game, Helldivers 2. This collaboration between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures was announced by Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions. While specifics remain scarce, the announcement confirmed the project is underway.
Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead Games, draws inspiration from the cult classic Starship Troopers, depicting futuristic soldiers defending a fascist Super Earth regime against alien threats, the Automatons and Terminids, all while upholding the ideals of "Managed Democracy."
Fan anticipation is high, but many questions remain unanswered. Arrowhead CCO Johan Pilestedt addressed concerns about the game's faithfulness in the film adaptation, confirming Arrowhead will have some involvement. However, he acknowledged the team lacks filmmaking expertise and will not have final creative control, a decision he believes is appropriate.
The choice of Helldivers 2 for adaptation, given the existence of Starship Troopers, is intriguing. The project appears to be in its early stages, with further details likely some time away.
Helldivers 2's remarkable success—selling 12 million copies in just 12 weeks, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever—has been further boosted by the recent release of the highly anticipated Illuminate update, introducing a third playable faction.
Sony's CES 2025 announcements also included a film adaptation of Guerrilla's Horizon Zero Dawn and an anime adaptation of Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima, highlighting Sony's commitment to video game adaptations. This follows the success of HBO's The Last of Us, with Season 2 slated for an April release.
