The long-awaited John Wick anime prequel has officially revealed its premise. Announced during CinemaCon 2024, this animated feature will see Keanu Reeves reprising his iconic role through voice acting—a commitment that comes alongside his confirmed return for the live-action John Wick 5.
The Impossible Task Comes to Life
This animated origin story will chronicle Wick's legendary 'Impossible Task,' a pivotal event frequently referenced throughout the film series that helped establish both his mythic reputation and the underworld's fearful respect for the assassin.
Lionsgate's official synopsis reveals:
The prequel explores John Wick's defining moment before the original film—the night he eliminated his entire rival network in a single bloody operation. This impossible mission served as his ticket to freedom from the High Table's control and his chance to reunite with his beloved Helen.Staying true to the franchise's signature style, the animated film will deliver the visually stunning, hard-hitting action sequences fans expect, crafted specifically for mature audiences.
Award-Winning Creative Team
The production reunites the franchise's key creative forces: producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road Films, director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves through 87Eleven Entertainment, with Alex Young and Jason Spitz executive producing.
Shannon Tindle—creator of the Oscar-nominated Kubo and the Two Strings and director of Netflix's Ultraman: Rising—will direct, working from a script by Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones, The Shape of Water).
