Mario Kart World's Character Select Screen Hides a Legendary Nintendo Easter Egg

Nintendo has embedded a legendary recurring Easter egg in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch title Mario Kart World, as fans have uncovered.

Totaka's Song, a hidden melody that has quietly appeared in countless Nintendo games, has surfaced once again—this time, audible on Mario Kart World’s character selection screen.

Simply hover over Yoshi in your character roster and let the green dinosaur dance for a moment. Eventually, he’ll begin humming a recognizable tune—yes, this is Yoshi singing Totaka’s Song.

Play"I was just idling on the Character Select screen when I realized Mario started humming after a while," wrote Reddit user charizardtelephone. "I thought, 'Hmm, they could totally hide hidden tunes like that.' Wait—hidden music? In a Nintendo game? With Yoshi? It seemed too good to be true."

From Super Smash Bros. to Wii Sports, Animal Crossing to Pikmin, Totaka’s Song lingers in all of them.

"After a few seconds, lo and behold, Yoshi starts humming Totaka’s Song just like the idle Yoshis in Mario Kart 8," charizardtelephone added, describing the discovery in Mario Kart World. "Such a neat Easter egg. I’m not sure if anyone else has spotted it yet."

In Japan, Mario Kart World is currently outpacing the physical sales of the original Switch’s launch title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game, which is bundled with the Switch, marks Nintendo’s first major success for its new console. Next up is Donkey Kong Bananza, with more details coming in a Nintendo Direct later this week.
