Disney has announced that the upcoming Cars-themed area at Walt Disney World will be named Piston Peak National Park, marking it as part of the "largest expansion in Magic Kingdom's history."
According to the Disney Parks Blog, construction on Piston Peak National Park will commence this summer. Consequently, the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat will temporarily close starting July 7.

Disney has further elaborated on its vision for this new section within Frontierland, offering fans a glimpse of what to expect.
"Picture an awe-inspiring wilderness with towering trees, snow-capped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, rushing rivers, and impressive geysers," Disney described. "While fictional, Piston Peak draws inspiration from the Rocky Mountain region, the history of the American Frontier, and the iconic landscapes found in national parks."
The area will feature locations inspired by Disney and Pixar's *Cars*, including a visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, and winding trails. To enhance the authentic national park feel, Imagineers are employing an architectural style known as "Parkitecture." This style, originally developed by the National Park Service, aims to "create structures that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings."
Abundant trees will provide a natural buffer between Piston Peak and the rest of Frontierland and Liberty Square. "Rugged, dramatically peaked mountains will line a serene waterway opposite Grizzly Hall, while soaring geysers from the famed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will extend into the trails of our off-road rally adventure."

This Cars-themed expansion was initially revealed at D23 2024, where Disney confirmed it would include two new rides. The first is a thrilling rally race through mountainous terrain. Disney promises guests will "tackle wild landscapes, climb mountain trails, dodge erupting geysers, and splash through mudholes—a favorite of Mater's." The second attraction is designed to be more family-friendly, offering "fun for guests of all ages."
At SXSW 2025, Disney Parks showcased the innovative ride vehicle developed specifically for the rally race. The team noted they had to invent a new system to ensure the cars deliver a unique and immersive "feeling when you ride in it." True to the *Cars* universe, each vehicle will possess its own distinct personality, name, and number.
Piston Peak National Park is a cornerstone of the grand new vision for Magic Kingdom. It will eventually be joined by the first-ever land dedicated to Disney Villains. In the more immediate future, guests can anticipate the debut of the Disney Starlight nighttime parade on July 20 as part of Disney World's Cool Kid Summer, along with the opening of The Beak and Barrel, a new tavern inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean, later this year.
