Navigating the sprawling map of Project Zomboid on foot is a marathon, not a sprint. Thankfully, many cars remain drivable, and if you lack the keys, hotwiring is your answer. It's surprisingly straightforward; a few button presses can get you behind the wheel. While not requiring a top-tier character build, there are prerequisites.
Hotwiring in Project Zomboid allows you to drive a car indefinitely (provided it has fuel and remains in good condition), bypassing the need for keys. However, you'll need Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar occupation during character creation grants this ability without skill requirements.
How to Hotwire a Car in Project Zomboid

The process is simple:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait briefly.
Once the hotwiring completes, press W to start the engine. Remember, fuel is essential; stock up before hitting the road.
Leveling Electrical and Mechanical Skills
If you didn't start as a Burglar, you'll need to level up your skills. Gain XP by:
- Electrical: Dismantling electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
- Mechanics: Removing and reinstalling mechanical parts.
Books and magazines found in homes, shops, mailboxes, and sheds also provide skill boosts. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command (check in-game for syntax) to grant players skill XP directly. Remember to use a screwdriver or appropriate tool when dismantling or installing parts. Right-click vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" to begin.
