PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)
The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given past trends, this restock is unlikely to last.
The scarcity stems partly from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020 and, more recently, the PS5 Pro in November 2024. Neither the Pro nor the Slim models offer a built-in disc drive option, forcing users who want to play physical media to purchase the drive separately. This has led to persistent shortages, particularly in the US.
While Amazon and PlayStation Direct are currently selling the drive for its MSRP of $79.99, availability is limited. PlayStation Direct restricts purchases to one per customer to deter scalpers. A third-party Walmart seller offers the drive, but at a significantly inflated price of $122 and with extremely limited stock. Other major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy remain out of stock. Similar shortages have also been reported in the UK since late 2024.
The timing of the shortages suggests a connection to the PS5 Pro's launch, as its lack of a disc drive option increases demand for the standalone accessory.
Where to Buy (as of this writing):
Store | Price |
---|---|
Amazon | $79.99 |
PlayStation Direct | $79.99 |
Walmart (Reseller) | $124 |
$424 $500 Save$76 $424 at Amazon $425 at Best Buy $425 at Newegg $500 at Target $500 at Sony
The ongoing shortage highlights the continued high demand for the PS5 disc drive and the challenges faced by consumers seeking to complete their PS5 experience with physical media playback. The duration of this shortage remains uncertain.
