NBCUniversal Claims, Then Denies "Super Mario World" Sequel

by Nicholas Feb 09,2026

The title for The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel may have been accidentally revealed early in an NBCUniversal press release that jumped the gun.

Fans across the internet spotted the since-edited announcement listing "Super Mario World" among upcoming Universal Pictures and Illumination films destined for Peacock streaming. Universal quickly scrubbed all Mario references from the document after the slip-up.

Interestingly, the original press release grouped Mario's supposed title with similarly vague franchise names — citing "Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions." Since we know these refer to Shrek 5 and Minions 3 respectively, "Super Mario World" might represent shorthand rather than the final title.

Yet unlike those placeholder names, "Super Mario World" carries more specificity than simply "Super Mario" - fueling fan speculation about its potential accuracy. The classic SNES-inspired title would indeed make perfect sense for the sequel.
