Amazon's God of War TV Series Greenlit for Season 2 Before Season 1 Release

by Ethan Apr 23,2025

The highly anticipated Amazon adaptation of the iconic video game series, God of War, is set to captivate audiences with not one but two confirmed seasons, as announced by the show's new showrunner, Ronald D. Moore. Stepping into the role previously held by Rafe Judkins, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, Moore shared insights into his latest project during a chat with Katee Sackhoff, his former co-star from Battlestar Galactica.

"Right now, I'm working on an adaptation of, there's a video game called God of War, a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they've asked me to come in," Moore explained. "So I'm literally in the writer's room, and working on that. That's my new thing."

Despite not identifying as a gamer, Moore has a soft spot for classic arcade games like Defender, Asteroids, and Centipede. He humorously recounted his struggles with modern gaming controllers: "'Press R1.' Which one's R1? Oh, I'm dead," he said, highlighting his challenge with adapting to the complexities of video game controls.

In his new role, Moore is not only serving as the writer but also as an executive producer and showrunner for the God of War series. His extensive experience includes working on acclaimed shows such as Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and being the showrunner for the critically acclaimed 2000s revival of Battlestar Galactica.

Despite the departure of some key members of the original team, Sony's Cory Barlog remains an executive producer, ensuring continuity and fidelity to the source material. The series will be based on the 2018 installment of God of War, promising fans a faithful adaptation of Kratos and Atreus's epic journey.

Amazon's swift renewal of other video game adaptations, such as the Fallout TV show and Secret Level, following their successful launches, signals strong confidence in the God of War series. This trend suggests promising streaming prospects for the God of War adaptation, much to the excitement of fans eagerly awaiting its premiere.
