A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on the often-overlooked Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Unlike the plentiful GBA games on the Nintendo Switch Online app, this list highlights those available for individual purchase. Ten standout titles are featured: four GBA and six Nintendo DS games.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge, this GBA version offers a solid, enjoyable experience. A worthwhile comparison piece, and surprisingly accessible even for non-shooter fans.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
Following the Mega Man X series' console struggles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title, while initially a bit rough around the edges, launches an excellent series. A great starting point for fans of the franchise.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, but justified by its distinct RPG gameplay. The unique battle system blends action and strategy, set within a clever virtual world concept. Though later entries falter, this title delivers a compelling and fun experience.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
From the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out. Its engaging soul-collecting system and enjoyable gameplay even overshadow the classic Symphony of the Night for some players. A standout third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Originally a cult hit with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge found wider success on DSiWare. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, leading to continued success across multiple consoles. Interestingly, its GBA predecessor is soon to be released.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title in origin (though not initially localized), Ace Attorney is a must-play. Blending investigations and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling, the first game sets a high bar for the series.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick offers a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save people and uncover the mystery of your death. A captivating and well-written adventure.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports exist, the Switch version provides a solid alternative for those without a DS. A highly recommended game.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
From the Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls. However, all three DS Castlevania games in this collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A challenging but rewarding RPG, Etrian Odyssey III is the largest of the trilogy. While not perfectly translated to the Switch, it remains a worthwhile experience for fans of the genre.
