Codenames Spy Game Launches on Android

If you enjoy word games, chances are you've played Codenames at some point. This beloved spy-themed board game is now available as a digital app. The original tabletop version was created by Vlaada Chvátil, while this adaptation is published by CGE Digital.

What Are Codenames?

Codenames are secret identities you assign to various characters. You join a team attempting to uncover undercover agents hidden behind coded names, guided by single-word hints from your spymaster. Your goal is to identify the correct terms while avoiding civilians and, most importantly, the assassin.

Codenames is a multiplayer experience where two teams match wits, competing to identify which grid words conceal their agents. You'll use a single clue that connects multiple terms. How skilled are you at interpreting subtle hints and outmaneuvering the opposing team?

The digital edition introduces fresh vocabulary, additional gameplay modes, and unlockable achievements. It also features a progression system where you'll advance through levels, collect rewards, and acquire special tools along the way.

The standout feature is its asynchronous multiplayer design. Participants have up to 24 hours to complete their turns. You can maintain multiple simultaneous games, compete against international opponents, and tackle daily single-player challenges.

It’s Still A Guessing Game!

You'll see a grid of cards on screen and must select those you believe conceal your agents. Correct guesses flip the cards to reveal identities, but choosing the assassin immediately ends the game for your team.

The challenge intensifies when managing multiple simultaneous games, but that's part of the fun! As your skills develop, you'll advance to the spymaster role—the team member who creates the clues.
