Reviews & Mini-Views
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)
The Nintendo Switch continues to offer second chances at classic games. Following the successful re-releases of titles like Trials of Mana and Live A Live, we now have the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, featuring Miles Edgeworth's adventures. This collection masterfully builds upon previous storylines, with the second game enhancing the first. Finally experiencing this localized version is a treat for fans.
The Investigations games offer a fresh perspective, showcasing the prosecution's side. While the core mechanics remain similar—searching for clues, questioning witnesses—the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a captivating twist. The pacing might feel less structured than other Ace Attorney titles, but overall, fans will appreciate this sub-series. The second game significantly improves upon the first, making the original experience more rewarding in retrospect.
Bonus features include an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the option to choose between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A handy dialog history feature is a welcome addition.
The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a compelling dual experience. The official localization of the second game is fantastic, and the additional features make this a complete package. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney game is now available on the Switch. If you've enjoyed the series, this is a must-have.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)
A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising yet welcome development. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original, perhaps even too much for some. Six challenging levels of physics-based platforming await, pushing players to their limits. A new easier mode caters to a wider audience.
The core gameplay remains familiar, with Yumetaro's star serving as a versatile tool. Collectibles offer customization options, rewarding players for tackling tougher sections. The game's length is comparable to the original, offering a satisfying challenge. While death is frequent, generous checkpoints prevent excessive frustration. The charming visuals and music enhance the experience.
Gimmick! 2 is a superb follow-up, cleverly building upon its predecessor without sacrificing its unique identity. Fans of the original and challenging platformers will be thrilled. However, those seeking a casual experience should be warned – this game retains the original's demanding difficulty.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style. Surprisingly, it works well, although the Switch's hardware might struggle at times. Despite performance limitations, the intense action, soundtrack, and visuals make it enjoyable.
The weapon system adds a strategic layer. Juggling the main gun, melee weapon, and rotating third weapon requires skillful timing and rhythm. The dash maneuver adds both offensive and defensive capabilities. Mastering this system is key to survival.
While different from the first game, Mecha Therion retains the original's atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. While other platforms offer better performance, the Switch version is still a satisfying experience.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)
A licensed game, naturally, caters to its fanbase. Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash delivers ample fan service, particularly in its writing and meta-systems. However, its appeal for non-fans is limited. The mini-games, while well-presented, lack variety and depth.
Even fans might find the game's emphasis on certain aspects underwhelming. While the visuals and audio are excellent, the limited gameplay might lead to quick burnout. Dedicated fans might find the unlockables appealing, but overall, the game falls short.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)
This collection shines a light on Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit titles. Featuring Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola, this package offers a unique glimpse into the publisher's Japanese heritage. The full localization of all three games is a significant achievement.
The games themselves offer a mixed bag. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island provides a solid adventure experience. The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. None are groundbreaking, but they offer a charming retro experience. Fans of Sunsoft and obscure NES titles will appreciate this collection.
