Baldur\'s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?

by Sophia Jan 22,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal decision: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, profoundly impacts the party's fate.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before deciding Orpheus's fate, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, exploring Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries significant weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High rolls (30+) may be needed in certain interactions to influence companion choices.

(Spoilers Ahead!)

Freeing Orpheus or Siding with the Emperor?

This choice hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

After the Netherbrain encounter (if failed), the Emperor presents the dilemma: free Orpheus or let him be assimilated for power.

Siding with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus's absorption, potentially upsetting Lae'zel and Karlach due to its impact on their personal quests. While this grants a combat advantage, it may be unsatisfying for players attached to these characters.

Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to potentially align with the Netherbrain. The risk of party members becoming Mind Flayers remains. However, Orpheus joins the fight against the Netherbrain, and he might even willingly become a Mind Flayer to save his people.

In short, choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation; choose Orpheus if you accept that risk for your companions. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus. The ultimate choice depends on player priorities.

Moral Considerations:

The "good" choice depends on individual perspectives, but loyalty plays a key role. Orpheus, a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, obeying Voss and Lae'zel might seem overly demanding to others. The Gith prioritize their own kind, even if their actions affect the wider world.

The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to stop the Netherbrain and aid the party. He acknowledges necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to Mind Flayer transformation, but it remains a morally sound path. Remember, multiple endings exist, so strategic choices can lead to optimal outcomes for everyone.
