A Highly Ambitious Endgame on the Horizon

Borderlands 4 Endgame Promises to be “Very Ambitious”

Gearbox Software has been sharing numerous insights into Borderlands 4's mechanics and lore ahead of its release, with a particular focus on a highly ambitious endgame. In a July 7 interview with Game Informer, Creative Director Graeme Timmins offered a glimpse into the content awaiting players after the main story concludes.

Timmins, who contributed to the development of Borderlands 3's endgame, mentioned the team has drawn from previous titles. He expressed confidence in understanding community expectations and confirmed that such features are already integrated into the upcoming game.

"We've been planning the endgame for Borderlands 4 from the very beginning," Timmins explained. "We have some exciting ideas to share soon, and we're applying the lessons learned from both Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and the Borderlands series to deliver the most refined endgame experience the franchise has seen."

Fans Develop Skill Planner Despite Ongoing Game Adjustments

Even before its release, fan enthusiasm is soaring, evidenced by the creation of a detailed skill tree planner months in advance. Twitter (X) user Byrd, in collaboration with Maxroll.gg, announced on July 7 the launch of a Borderlands 4 skill planner for the playable Vault Hunters Vex and Rafa.

However, Timmins responded to the post, reminding the community that the game is still in development and all skills are subject to change. "This is a fantastic tool!! But please keep in mind... the game isn't finalized yet... and all skills are SUBJECT TO CHANGE :) We're currently balancing and fine-tuning every character, so the versions you've played or seen in demos may differ from the final launch. Just a friendly reminder :)."

"Welcome to Kairos" Trailer Unveils New Setting Details

The second installment of the BEYOND THE BORDERLANDS video series, "Welcome to Kairos," gives fans a closer look at the prison planet Kairos. Uploaded on July 8, this 7-minute video delves into the game's environment, introduces new factions and their leaders, and explains the origins of the main protagonist, the Time Keeper.

With the Time Keeper ruling as a harsh dictator, Vault Hunters must unite various factions to overthrow his regime. Key groups include The Outbounders, The Augurs, The Electi, The Ripper Queen, and Idolater Sol of the Fadefields. Each faction operates with its own motives, and players must persuade them to join the Crimson Resistance in the fight against tyranny.

Borderlands 4 Endgame Promises to be “Very Ambitious”

Regarding the creation of the main antagonist, Managing Director of Narrative Lin Joyce mentioned the team studied past series villains to ensure the Time Keeper stands apart. Narrative Director Sam Winkler added that they aimed for a villain who embodies a constant, oppressive presence without becoming tiresome. "We wanted a new type of antagonist for the franchise—one who is always felt, never overstays his welcome, and commands control effortlessly," Winkler stated.

Joyce further elaborated on the game's expansive world, highlighting the return of fan-requested elements while ensuring the game remains accessible to new players. "This installment marks a pivotal moment in our universe, bridging past titles with future directions. Where the story leads makes it an essential play for everyone," she said.

With Gearbox introducing innovations such as the removal of loading screens and enhancements to the weapon system, Borderlands 4 is positioned to become the standout title in the series. The game is scheduled for release on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. For the latest updates, be sure to read our related article below.
