The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to captivate players once again with a fresh take nearly 50 years later. Introducing Breakout Beyond, a modern reinterpretation of Atari's classic brick-breaker game, which retains the familiar paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique sideways progression.
Developed by Choice Provisions, the creative minds behind the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond features a left-to-right movement as players aim to break bricks. The game escalates with increasingly intense lights and effects as players build combos. Special bricks trigger spectacular effects, from massive explosions to deploying an actual laser cannon, adding a thrilling twist to the gameplay.
With 72 meticulously designed levels and an unlockable endless mode complete with a global online leaderboard, Breakout Beyond promises hours of engaging play. For those who prefer company, the game also supports local two-player co-op, enhancing the social gaming experience.
Originally slated for exclusive release on the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond faced a change in direction when Atari acquired and took over its development. Ethan Stearns, Atari's Senior Director of Games Publishing, expressed excitement about the acquisition, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."
The Intellivision Amico, which was announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 release, has yet to launch due to numerous setbacks and delays. In a significant move last year, Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision, excluding the Amico console itself.
Gamers can look forward to Breakout Beyond later this year, as it will be available on a wide range of platforms including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
