Cheat Developer Claims Shutdown, Call of Duty Players Doubtful

by Dylan Jul 23,2025

Call of Duty cheat provider Phantom Overlay has announced it is shutting down, according to a statement posted on Telegram. The developer did not disclose the specific reasons behind the immediate closure but emphasized: "This is not an exit scam and no external entity could ever compel me to exit scam my customers. I'll keep everything updated, safe, and online for 32 days longer."

The 32-day extension ensures that users with active 30-day keys receive their full service duration. Additionally, the creator confirmed partial refunds will be issued for lifetime key holders.

Phantom Overlay’s infrastructure supports several other cheat providers, meaning its shutdown could significantly disrupt the broader cheating ecosystem within Call of Duty titles.

Reactions from the community have been mixed. One player commented on X (formerly Twitter), via Dexerto: "I can't believe it!! Does this mean the Season 3 cheat update is really gonna work?!" Meanwhile, another user expressed skepticism, stating: "They're just rebranding. They have the same provider under multiple names/brands. The cheaters won't stop."

Activision recently acknowledged that its anti-cheat measures for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 "did not hit the mark" at the start of Season 1, especially in Ranked Play. The studio had previously promised to remove cheaters from matches within one hour of detection.

However, Activision now reports improved performance across multiple Ricochet Anti-Cheat systems, resulting in the removal of over 19,000 accounts. Despite these efforts, widespread cheating continues to impact competitive gameplay, prompting criticism from the player base.

In response to player concerns, Activision allowed console players to disable crossplay with PC during Ranked Play starting with Season 2.

While cheating affects many online games, the issue intensified after the 2020 release of the free-to-play Warzone. Despite significant investment in anti-cheat technology and legal action against cheat developers — including several high-profile victories — many players remain doubtful about the long-term effectiveness of Ricochet.

In other news, fans can expect more details about the return of Call of Duty Warzone’s iconic Verdansk map on March 10.
