Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the franchise with its VR debut this Spring 2025. Dive into the latest updates and features of Civ 7 VR below.
Civilization 7 Coming to VR This Spring 2025
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) will be exclusively available on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. Announced on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event by 2K Games and Firaxis Games, this marks the franchise's inaugural foray into virtual and mixed reality.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm in a blog post on 2k’s website, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Meta Director of Games Chris Pruett also shared his confidence in the project, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
Notably, while Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, Civ 7 VR will not be coming to PSVR2 at this time.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces a unique Command Table, allowing players to navigate and strategize as if they were playing a real-life tabletop game. The game offers flexibility, enabling players to switch between immersive virtual reality and mixed reality modes. In VR, players find themselves in a museum-like setting overlooking a personalized vista; in MR, the Command Table integrates seamlessly into the player's physical environment.
The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, accommodating up to four players on Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can engage with AI-controlled opponents or challenge human players, all while seeing their friends and opponents as their chosen leaders across the Command Table. Online multiplayer requires both a 2k Account and a Meta Account.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
In response to feedback gathered during Civ 7’s early access period, Firaxis Games has committed to addressing player concerns. The Advanced Access phase, which started on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe Edition and Founder’s Edition purchasers, received mixed reviews on Steam, primarily due to UI issues.
Firaxis Games is prioritizing UI enhancements, aiming to make interactions more intuitive, improve map readability, and refine formatting. Additionally, they plan to introduce community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer, a broader selection of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy and crises improvements, and bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is slated for release in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with no specific date announced yet. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will launch globally on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
