Digital Foundry's YouTube channel recently released an extensive hour-long video, diving deep into the comparison between the original Half-Life 2 from 2004 and its upcoming remaster, Half-Life 2 RTX. This project, spearheaded by Orbifold Studios—a team of seasoned modders—aims to revamp the classic game with significant visual enhancements. These include upgraded lighting, new assets, ray tracing technology, and the integration of DLSS 4, promising a visually stunning experience. Notably, the remaster will be available for free to those who already own Half-Life 2 on Steam, although an official release date has yet to be announced.
Starting March 18, fans can get a taste of the remaster through a free demo, which will feature two of the game's most memorable locations: the eerie, abandoned city of Ravenholm and the formidable Nova Prospekt prison. Prior to this, a new trailer was released, showcasing the game's impressive ray tracing capabilities and the performance-enhancing DLSS 4 technology.
The video by Digital Foundry is a record-breaking 75 minutes in length, with experts meticulously analyzing gameplay footage from both Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt. They provide a side-by-side comparison of the remastered visuals against the original, underscoring the dramatic improvements achieved by Orbifold Studios.
Orbifold Studios is diligently working on incorporating high-resolution textures, advanced lighting effects, ray tracing, and DLSS 4 into Half-Life 2 RTX. While Digital Foundry's experts were impressed by the results, they did note occasional frame rate drops in specific areas. However, the overall transformation of the game is described as remarkable, offering a fresh and vibrant take on the iconic Half-Life 2.
