Rumors suggest Bethesda is gearing up to announce a remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in the coming weeks, with a release shortly after.
NatetheHate, who previously disclosed the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal date, tweeted that the Oblivion remake will be unveiled either this month or next—a claim VGC has verified.
The exact release timeframe is less certain. NatetheHate indicated it will likely arrive before June, while VGC suggested it could launch as early as April.
Back in January, Mp1st covered leaked details about the Oblivion remake, which were apparently unintentionally shared by a former Virtuos employee. Microsoft provided no comment when IGN reached out.
As per Mp1st, Virtuos rebuilt Bethesda’s popular open-world RPG using Unreal Engine 5, pointing to a comprehensive remake rather than a basic remaster. Gameplay adjustments were also reportedly outlined, covering changes to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the HUD.
According to the same report, Blocking was reworked with action and Soulslike titles in mind—apparently the original system was considered tedious and frustrating. Sneak icons are now highlighted, and the damage system was overhauled. Depleting Stamina to trigger knockdowns is said to be less frequent. The HUD received a redesign for better readability. Additionally, hit reactions were introduced for clearer feedback, and Archery was modernized across both first and third-person views.

Talks of an Oblivion remaster surfaced in 2023 when documents from the FTC v. Microsoft lawsuit over the Activision Blizzard acquisition listed several unannounced Bethesda titles planned for future release. The document, drafted in July 2020 before Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media in March 2021, contained the following entries:
FY 2022:
Oblivion RemasterIndiana Jones title
FY 2023
Doom Year Zero + DLCProject KestrelProject Platinum
FY 2024
The Elder Scrolls 6Project Kestrel ExpansionLicensed IP GameFallout 3 RemasterGhostwire: Tokyo SequelDishonored 3Doom Year Zero DLC
Clearly, several of these titles were postponed or canceled entirely. Doom Year Zero is now Doom: The Dark Ages and is scheduled for a May launch. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle didn’t arrive until December 2024. And The Elder Scrolls 6 was nowhere close to releasing in FY 2024.
Still, the Oblivion remaster is what currently draws our attention. However, it’s important to note the Microsoft document described it as a remaster. It's possible the project's scope expanded, and Bethesda shifted to a full-scale remake. We’ll know for sure once the developer reveals what has become one of gaming’s most poorly kept secrets.
Another question is which platforms will host the Oblivion remake. Microsoft has fully embraced multiplatform strategies, and with the Nintendo Switch 2 approaching, Oblivion might reach beyond PC, Xbox, and PlayStation audiences. If the Switch 2 launches around June, the remake may even be part of its launch lineup.
