The beloved asymmetric multiplayer game, Evil Dead: The Game, has been removed from digital storefronts by its publisher, marking the end of its availability for purchase. Launched in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms, the game received an 8/10 in IGN's review, which praised its thrilling cat-and-mouse gameplay, despite some rough edges reminiscent of the horror/comedy films that inspired it.
Despite the release of a Game of the Year Edition in the following year, the game struggled to maintain player engagement. The planned Nintendo Switch version was canceled in September 2023, and content development was halted, signaling the beginning of the end for the title. Now, three years after its initial launch, Evil Dead: The Game is no longer available for new purchases, though its servers will remain active, allowing existing players to continue enjoying the game.
In a statement on the game's Steam page, developer and publisher Saber Interactive confirmed the delisting:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision has been met with disappointment from the community, as evidenced by the numerous negative reviews on the game's Steam page. Players lament the game's effective demise, with many reviews contributing to its 'mixed' user review rating. One recent positive review from a dedicated player with over 380 hours of gameplay poignantly noted, "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, known for last year's successful release Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, continues to work on several licensed movie games. Upcoming titles include John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game, Turok: Origins, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3.
