Microsoft has delayed the release of Fable from 2025 to 2026, but offered a first glimpse of exciting new gameplay footage to soften the blow. This highly anticipated reboot of the beloved Xbox franchise, originally developed by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios, is being crafted by Playground Games, the acclaimed studio behind the Forza Horizon series.
In a recent Xbox Podcast, Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, reassured fans that the delay is worthwhile. He emphasized his confidence in Playground Games, highlighting their track record of critically acclaimed, award-winning titles like Forza Horizon, boasting average Metacritic scores of 92. He described the new Fable as a visually stunning and exceptionally playable game, incorporating British humor and a beautifully realized version of Albion, while remaining true to the spirit of the original franchise. Duncan stressed that the delay prioritizes delivering the best possible game experience.
Accompanying the delay announcement, Microsoft unveiled approximately 50 seconds of pre-alpha gameplay. This brief but impactful footage showcased Fable's combat system, featuring a variety of weapons (one-handed sword, two-handed hammer, two-handed sword) and magic (fireball). City exploration, horseback riding through a fantastical forest, and even the iconic chicken-kicking were all featured, providing a compelling taste of the game's visual fidelity and overall tone. A particularly memorable scene involved the protagonist setting a trap using sausages to lure a werewolf-like creature into combat.
Initially announced in 2020 as a "new beginning," Playground Games' Fable reboot received further attention in 2023's Xbox Game Showcase, presented by Richard Ayoade, and again in June 2024's Xbox Showcase. This marks the first mainline Fable game since 2010's Fable 3 and stands as one of Xbox Game Studios' most anticipated upcoming releases.
