Fresh excitement surrounds the long-rumored Final Fantasy IX remake following Square Enix's launch of an official 25th anniversary website for the classic RPG.
The Japanese-language site commemorates Final Fantasy IX's original release date (July 7, 2000) while highlighting this year's quarter-century milestone.
"We're planning special anniversary projects including merchandise and collaborations – stay tuned for updates!" the announcement continues.
This seemingly casual statement, coupled with the website's launch, has reignited speculation about Square Enix potentially unveiling the highly anticipated remake.
Observant fans note the timing coincides with Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2-focused Direct presentation on April 2. Could this signal a Final Fantasy IX remake announcement for the new console? Many are cautiously optimistic.
However, expectations should be tempered – while the site mentions "various projects," these could simply involve themed merchandise rather than a full remake.
Last year, Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida discussed potential challenges in remaking Final Fantasy IX, suggesting its expansive content might require multiple installments.
"While we recognize fan demand for a Final Fantasy IX remake, the game's massive scope presents challenges," Yoshi-P noted. "Would a single-title remake do it justice? These are complex considerations."
His comments imply any potential remake could follow Final Fantasy VII's multi-part approach.
Earlier this year, Yoshi-P revealed Final Fantasy IX-themed bonuses for Final Fantasy XIV's Dawntrail expansion, including Zidane and Garnet companion figures and the iconic Ark summon.
During PAX East, Yoshi-P cryptically teased: "You might wonder about all these Final Fantasy IX references... but the reason remains secret for now," before theatrically miming zipping his lips.

Rumors of a Final Fantasy IX remake first gained traction following its appearance in Nvidia's 2021 leaked database of unreleased games. While several listed Square Enix projects (like the Chrono Cross remaster and Kingdom Hearts IV) have since materialized, both Final Fantasy IX and Tactics remakes remain unannounced. These rumors were further fueled by reports of an animated series adaptation in mid-2021, though no updates have surfaced since.
