George R. R. Martin, the author behind Game of Thrones, has given his take on the recently announced Elden Ring film—and his reaction appears to be very positive about the forthcoming adaptation.
Martin, who helped craft the lore for FromSoftware's acclaimed game, expressed his enthusiasm that the Elden Ring movie will be directed by Alex Garland, known for Ex Machina, Civil War, and Annihilation.
On his personal blog, Martin called Garland a "first-rate director" and described production studio A24 as "kickass." Summing up his feelings about the news, he shared that he's feeling "hopeful," and linked to a YouTube video titled "Why the Elden Ring Movie WON'T SUCK."
While Martin is clearly optimistic about the film, there's no indication yet that he is personally involved. In fact, the writer is already balancing several other projects, including an upcoming animated Hercules movie that was announced just last month.
News of Martin's role in A Dozen Tough Jobs, a retelling of the Greek legend set in the early 20th century, prompted renewed criticism from Game of Thrones fans who are still awaiting The Winds of Winter.
Last week, Martin addressed the frustration, admitting that "some of you will just be upset by this" and noting that many fans have "given up" on him finishing the next book—never mind the final novel in the series that is planned to follow.
"I wish you all could share my excitement about this movie," Martin said regarding the Hercules project.

The Winds of Winter, the highly anticipated next entry in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, remains unfinished with no confirmed publication date. It has now been 14 years since A Dance with Dragons was released in 2011.
Few other details are available about the Elden Ring adaptation, though Garland is said to be interested in reuniting with Heartstopper and Warfare actor Kit Connor for a major part. The film has not yet entered production, and no release window has been set.
