The highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a significant creative restructuring. Several key producers have departed, leading to a complete reboot of the project. Read on for details on the departures and the future plans of Sony and Amazon.
God of War TV Series: A Fresh Start
Project Continues, Not Cancelled
Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have left the God of War TV series. Despite having completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.
However, the project is not cancelled. Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio’s Creative Director), Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio) will continue as executive producers. A new showrunner, producers, and writers will be sought to redefine the series' direction.
Future Adaptations Despite Setbacks
Initially announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, the Amazon and Sony collaboration for the God of War TV series followed the immense success of the 2018 game reboot. This project reflects Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises for film and television, a strategy that led to the establishment of PlayStation Productions in 2019.
This initiative has already yielded several successful adaptations, including Uncharted (2022), the critically acclaimed The Last of Us (Season 2 in 2025), Gran Turismo (2023), and Twisted Metal (2024). Further projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the upcoming Until Dawn film (April 25, 2025).
