Guerrilla Games Has Huge Ambitions for Horizon Multiplayer Game

by Evelyn Mar 21,2025

Summary

  • Guerrilla Games' upcoming Horizon multiplayer game may be anticipated to have exceptionally high player interest.
  • A recent job listing suggests the studio is building live-service systems capable of supporting over one million players.
  • Alternatively, Guerrilla might be proactively preparing robust infrastructure to prevent server issues at launch, learning from the Helldivers 2 experience.

A recent Guerrilla Games job posting hints at significant confidence in their upcoming Horizon multiplayer game. While unannounced, the listing suggests Guerrilla anticipates massive player interest in this live-service title.

Following the 2022 release of Horizon Forbidden West and its Burning Shores DLC in 2023, Guerrilla has remained relatively quiet, focusing on collaborations for projects like Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and LEGO Horizon Adventures. However, evidence pointing towards a Horizon multiplayer game has been accumulating for years, with job listings dating back to 2018 hinting at its existence. By 2025, its development seems all but confirmed.

While the official announcement remains pending, a new job listing for a Senior Platform Engineer reveals potentially ambitious player count expectations. The listing requires "proven experience building and operating multi-service, 1M+ user globally distributed systems across multiple public cloud providers," suggesting a robust live-service infrastructure designed to handle over one million players.

Guerrilla's Focus on a Smooth Launch for the Horizon Multiplayer Game

This focus on scalability could also be a precautionary measure to avoid launch issues. Helldivers 2's initial server overload, impacting both new and existing players, serves as a cautionary tale. While the Horizon multiplayer game's success isn't guaranteed to mirror Helldivers 2's, Guerrilla's preparedness is understandable.

With years of development under its belt, and assuming no major setbacks, Guerrilla may be preparing to reveal the live-service title this year. A previous job listing hinted at a new Horizon game release in 2025. Given that a third mainline Horizon title is still some time away, this 2025 release could very well be the anticipated multiplayer project.
