Jerry Hook's Jar of Sparks, a NetEase-backed studio, has paused development on its debut game project and is actively seeking a new publishing partner. This news follows Hook's departure from 343 Industries and Microsoft in 2022, after which he established Jar of Sparks with the ambitious goal of creating "next-generation narrative-driven action games."
NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles like Once Human and Marvel Rivals. The latter, launched recently to considerable success, has just unveiled its Season 1 Battle Pass and is gearing up for the addition of the Fantastic Four on January 10th.
In a LinkedIn post, Hook confirmed the development pause, explaining that Jar of Sparks is searching for a publishing partner capable of realizing their creative vision. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work and bold risks taken to date.
While layoffs weren't explicitly mentioned, Hook indicated the team will be exploring new opportunities, and a subsequent post confirmed efforts to find new roles for all team members as the first project concludes. This mirrors the experience of other veteran developers who've partnered with NetEase, such as Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who formed GPTRACK50 Studios in 2022.
The news comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise, Hook's former employer. Following challenges with Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the reception of the Paramount+ series, 343 Industries has rebranded as Halo Studios and is shifting to Unreal Engine for future titles. This restructuring may signal a turning point for the franchise.
