Overwatch 2's 6v6 Playtest Extended, Transitioning to Open Queue
Overwatch 2's limited-time 6v6 mode playtest, initially slated to conclude on January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will shift to an open queue format.
The 6v6 mode's popularity surged after its return, fueling speculation about its permanent integration into the game. Its initial run during last year's Overwatch Classic event demonstrated significant player engagement. While the second playtest, launched in December, omitted some classic hero abilities, its success prompted the extension.
Keller announced the extension via Twitter. While the precise end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 experimental mode will soon move to the Arcade section. Until mid-season, it will retain its current structure. Post mid-season, it will transition to an open queue, mandating 1-3 heroes per class on each team.
The Case for Permanent 6v6
The enduring popularity of 6v6 isn't unexpected. Since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch, the return of 6v6 has been a consistently top player request. The shift to 5v5 gameplay in the sequel significantly altered the game's dynamics, a change not universally embraced.
The extended playtest and potential inclusion in the competitive playlist offer renewed hope for 6v6's permanent return. The outcome will likely depend on the results of the ongoing playtests.
