Persistent PS5 Disc Drive Shortage Impacts PS5 Pro Owners
Since the November 2024 launch of the PS5 Pro, a significant shortage of standalone PlayStation 5 disc drives persists, frustrating gamers. The PS5 Pro's digital-only design necessitates the purchase of this accessory, creating high demand.
Sony's own PS Direct online stores in both the US and UK consistently show the drive as out of stock, with any available units quickly disappearing. This mirrors the challenges faced during the initial PS5 launch in 2020, with scalpers acquiring drives and reselling them at exorbitant prices. This adds considerable expense to the already high cost of the PS5 Pro console.
While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally receive limited stock, the availability remains extremely sporadic and insufficient to meet demand. The situation is further complicated by the lack of any official statement from Sony regarding the shortage. This silence is particularly striking given Sony's previous efforts to maintain PS5 production during the pandemic.
The PS5 Pro's omission of a built-in disc drive has been a source of contention since its September unveiling. The added cost of the separate drive, approximately $80 from official sources, is significantly increased by scalping activities. Consequently, many PlayStation fans are forced into a prolonged wait for improved supply and reduced demand – a resolution that currently seems distant.
