Originally known as Project Q, the PlayStation Portal boasts an 8-inch LCD screen with a full HD 1080p display and a smooth 60 frames per second (fps) resolution. It integrates key features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, bringing the PS5 console experience into a portable format.
"PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house," Sony stated in their announcement of the PlayStation Portal's Southeast Asian release. "PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi, allowing you to seamlessly transition from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal."
Sony Improves Wi-Fi Connectivity for Remote Play
One of the standout features of the PlayStation Portal is its ability to connect to a user's PS5 console over Wi-Fi, enabling a smooth transition between TV and handheld play. However, initial user feedback highlighted less-than-ideal performance in this area. Sony noted that the PlayStation Portal Remote Player requires a broadband internet Wi-Fi connection with at least 5Mbps for optimal use.
In response to these concerns, Sony recently released a major update for the PlayStation Portal, enhancing its connectivity capabilities. Previously limited to slower 2.4GHz bands, the device can now connect to certain 5GHz networks thanks to Update 3.0.1, which was rolled out just a few days ago.
Feedback from PlayStation Portal users on social media has been overwhelmingly positive regarding the update. One user remarked, "I’m the biggest portal hater, but mine is playing much better so far," indicating a significant improvement in connectivity and overall user experience.
