Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film: Sooner Than Expected, Says Writer

by Brooklyn May 23,2025

Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film? Fear not, fans of the galaxy far, far away—the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still hard at work on this exciting project. And we have a fresh update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, to keep our hopes high.

"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, expressing his enthusiasm for the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

As of now, the plot remains shrouded in mystery, with one key detail confirmed: the movie is set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously shed light on the film’s timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This makes Levy's film the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

Kennedy also confirmed during the same discussion that the movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Adding to the excitement, reports suggest that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film.

Tropper's optimistic words suggest that progress is being made, though fans will need to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, for the film's release.

Since the release of the critically panned Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has not released a new Star Wars film. Several projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have been canceled. Moreover, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in the Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey, exploring events following The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several script changes, with Steven Knight recently stepping away after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a central focus for Disney's future Star Wars plans, with reports indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming films.

And that's not all on Disney's Star Wars agenda. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will write a new trilogy, separate from the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars content to grace our screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a thrilling triple episode launch.
