Smash Together, an unofficial dating app designed for like-minded Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts, recently announced it had received a cease-and-desist letter just prior to its scheduled open beta launch. Originally set to debut today, May 15, following extensive development, the app’s official account shared a melancholy Yoshi meme on May 13, stating: "We got cease and desisted." The post was spotted by Automaton.

While the developers did not disclose the sender of the cease-and-desist, it is widely assumed to be Nintendo, given the app’s focus on Smash Bros.
SmashTogether positioned itself as the "premium dating site for Super Smash Bros. enjoyers of all kinds," offering a matchmaking algorithm intended to connect users with their ideal Smash partner. Screenshot previews showcased features such as selecting your main character, highlighting notable achievements, and prompts tailored to the Smash community, like "Someone who can make it out of pools at a major."
Beyond potential intellectual property concerns, the concept of a dating app centered around a game like Smash Bros. likely contributed to the decision to issue the cease-and-desist. As of now, there has been no indication from SmashTogether regarding plans to pivot without relying on Smash Bros. as its core theme. In the meantime, I’ll leave the Smash jokes where they belong—unwritten.
