Sony's policy requiring PlayStation Network (PSN) tethering for its PC releases, even single-player titles, has sparked significant backlash from gamers. This restriction, coupled with inconsistent regional PSN availability, has limited the accessibility and sales of many recent Sony game releases.
Recently, Sony announced some modifications to this policy. While the company hasn't completely abandoned PSN tethering for PC games, they have introduced several concessions.
PSN tethering will be optional for the following titles:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players who choose to tether their games to PSN will receive the following incentives:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Black Bear armor set, the "Lost Things" chest at the game's start, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points for unlocking features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In a November investor call, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the player opposition to PSN connection requirements. He maintained that this tethering is crucial for security and order, citing "service-based games." However, he failed to adequately explain how requiring a PSN account enhances security in single-player games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.
Times have changed, and the gaming landscape demands greater flexibility and accessibility.
