Tencent, a leading Chinese tech company, has reportedly secured a majority stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition significantly alters the landscape for both companies.
Tencent's Increased Stake in Kuro Games
Majority Ownership Secured
Tencent's share in Kuro Games has risen to approximately 51.4%, following a recent acquisition of roughly 37% of the shares. This, coupled with the departure of other shareholders, grants Tencent controlling interest and makes it Kuro Games' sole external investor. This follows an initial investment by Tencent in Kuro Games in 2023.
Despite this significant investment, Kuro Games assures continued independence in its operations, mirroring Tencent's approach with Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). The company statement emphasizes that this move will foster a more stable operating environment and support its long-term growth strategy. Tencent has yet to release an official statement.
Kuro Games' Success and Future Outlook
Kuro Games is a prominent Chinese game developer celebrated for its action RPG, Punishing: Gray Raven, and the recently released open-world RPG, Wuthering Waves. Both titles have achieved remarkable success, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue and receiving ongoing updates. The recognition of Wuthering Waves extends to a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards.
