MCU Star Scarlett Johansson Casts Doubt on Black Widow Return: 'She's Dead'

by Aaliyah May 19,2025

Scarlett Johansson, a key figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly stated that her character, Black Widow, is "dead" and she doesn't seem keen on reprising the role in the near future. During an interview with InStyle, Johansson discussed the future of her character while also looking forward to her role in the upcoming big-budget film, Jurassic World Rebirth. Despite her impactful portrayal of Natasha Romanoff, Johansson appears resolute in her stance on not returning to the role.

"Natasha is dead. She is dead. She's dead. Okay?" Johansson emphasized, responding to fans' hopes for her return. "We’re going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment." Although Johansson last played Black Widow in the 2021 standalone film, the character met her definitive end in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, sacrificing herself to save Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye. Despite the clarity of her death, fans continue to speculate about potential ways for her to return.

"They just don't want to believe it," Johansson added. "They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."

The MCU has a history of reviving deceased characters, and upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are anticipated not only as the next big chapters in the MCU but also as potential showcases for numerous cameos. These films, slated for release on May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, respectively, have fueled speculation about which characters, including those previously deceased, might return.

Rumors have swirled around other MCU stars as well. Robert Downey Jr. is set to transition from Iron Man to play Doctor Doom, marking his first live-action portrayal of the character in over a decade. Additionally, there were unconfirmed reports from The Wrap about Chris Evans potentially returning as Captain America, though he later denied these claims. Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter, who has died twice within the MCU, is also rumored to appear in Doomsday. With such a buzz around possible returns, it's understandable why fans hold out hope for Black Widow's comeback, despite Johansson's clear statements.
