Marvel Rivals' Modding Spree Raises Ban Concerns

by Alexis Feb 19,2025

Despite a Season 1 crackdown, Marvel Rivals players continue to risk account bans by using mods. Since the game's December launch, custom skins created via mods have been popular, ranging from Iron Man as Vegeta to Mantis as a goth character, and even Jeff the Land Shark as Pochita.

NetEase, the developer, implemented asset hash checking to restrict mods, reiterating that their terms of service prohibit mods, cheats, and unauthorized third-party software. While warnings were issued, a workaround is now circulating online, requiring more steps but remaining accessible to many PC players.

Modder Prafit, who shared a workaround on Nexus Mods, cautioned users about the risk of bans, noting that while permanent bans haven't been observed, NetEase could still take action. New mods featuring Fantastic Four characters have already emerged, with one transforming Mister Fantastic into Luffy from One Piece, garnering over 5,000 downloads in just two days.

The potential for bans remains a question. While no confirmed bans for mod usage have surfaced yet, the workaround's widespread adoption might prompt NetEase to act. The developer's motivation for banning mods likely stems from potential revenue loss from skin sales, intellectual property concerns, gameplay balance disruption, and potential performance impacts. Prafit even advises that their workaround is only suitable for high-specification PCs.
