Nintendo's Switch 2 GameChat Camera: 1080p vs Hori's Piranha Plant: 480p

Hori's Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera offers a resolution of just 480p, which is significantly lower than the 1080p resolution of Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera. The UK My Nintendo Store has officially confirmed these resolutions, providing clear expectations for consumers.

Despite its lower resolution, Hori's Piranha Plant camera, which is officially licensed by Nintendo, comes at a more affordable price point than Nintendo’s own $49.99 camera. It's important to note that alongside the Switch 2, set to release on June 5, you can use the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory or any compatible USB-C camera.

The Piranha Plant camera offers a unique feature: the part housing the webcam can detach from the pot, allowing you to place it directly on top of the Switch 2 for enhanced portability—a feature not found in Nintendo’s own camera. Additionally, you can close the plant’s mouth to obscure the lens, adding a fun and practical element to the accessory.

The revelation that the Piranha Plant camera is only 480p has sparked a variety of reactions among Nintendo fans. On Reddit, user Ramen536Pie questioned, "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025? That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost found humor in the situation, commenting, "That’s actually hilarious. Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Meanwhile, pokemonfitness1420 wondered, "Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?"

During last week’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo introduced the Switch 2’s GameChat functionality, which can be initiated with a press of the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature allows players to watch each other play the same or different games and, with the aid of a camera, even see each other. The built-in microphone promises reliable performance across various gaming environments, and the C button's chat menu is designed to be an all-encompassing multiplayer feature that could mark Nintendo's most successful online push in decades.
