New World of Warcraft Video Explains Feast of Winter Veil Lore

Summary

  • World of Warcraft's Feast of Winter Veil is a yearly Christmas-like event with unique rewards and items.
  • A lore video, created in collaboration with PlatinumWoW, explores the holiday's origins, including Dwarven myths, a Titan-forged giant, and Tauren traditions.
  • This collaboration highlights Blizzard's ongoing partnership with content creators.

World of Warcraft recently partnered with PlatinumWoW to produce a lore video detailing the rich history of the Feast of Winter Veil. This in-game event, a World of Warcraft equivalent to Christmas, boasts a long and entertaining history in Azeroth, from its origins to the infamous kidnappings of Metzen the Reindeer.

The Feast of Winter Veil is an annual event featuring special rewards and activities, often introducing new collectable items obtainable through various means like random drops or gold. A new video, narrated by PlatinumWoW, delves into the holiday's origins, exploring the Dwarven myth of Greatfather Winter—a Titan-forged giant who brings snow—and the Tauren traditions of spiritual reflection, renewal, and gratitude towards the Earthmother. The video also explains the rise of Smokeywood Pastures, a Goblin business that commercialized Winter Veil, mirroring real-world Christmas commercialization.

History of the Feast of Winter Veil in World of Warcraft

No Winter Veil lore video would be complete without mentioning Metzen the Reindeer, named after former Warcraft executive creative director Chris Metzen. This unfortunate reindeer has been kidnapped three times: by pirates and Dark Iron Dwarves in Classic, and by the Grinch in modern World of Warcraft. The video humorously concludes with Metzen the Reindeer expressing gratitude in Thrall's voice, a fitting touch given Chris Metzen's voice acting role.

This isn't PlatinumWoW's first collaboration with Blizzard. Previous videos explored Nerubians, Vrykul, the Scourge (for Wrath of the Lich King Classic), World Trees, Blackrock Depths, and events like Season of Discovery and Plunderstorm. This collaboration, alongside Taliesin & Evitel's returning player guides for Dragonflight and Hurricane's cinematic trailers for World of Warcraft Classic, showcases Blizzard's active engagement with content creators.

Players can enjoy the Feast of Winter Veil until January 5, 2024. This year's highlights include the tamable Dreaming Festive Reindeer for Hunters, new holiday transmogs, and the Grunch pet for all players. Players are encouraged to check for a special Winter Veil gift under the tree in Orgrimmar or Stormwind, similar to last year's Junior Timekeeper's Racing Belt toy.
