Steam Player Count Soars After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has reached a significant milestone with the launch of its long-awaited final patch, marking the end of its historic run. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios released BG3’s Patch 8, the last major update for the game. This finality has spurred a notable increase in player count, propelling BG3 just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game now boasts over 169,000 players as of the latest reports.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke celebrated the surge in players on Twitter (X) on April 22, attributing it to the robust mod support that allows the studio to shift focus toward their "next big thing." It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will depart from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative ventures.
As a result, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise independently. They are currently engaging with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

Patch 8, first announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been eagerly anticipated. This final update enriches the game with 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and a host of other features.
