Recent reports from video game market research firm Niko Partners suggest a joint venture between Square Enix and Tencent to create a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV. This article delves into the details of this potential collaboration and its implications.
Square Enix and Tencent's Potential FFXIV Mobile Game
Largely Unconfirmed
Niko Partners' latest report details a list of games approved for release in China. Among them, a mobile iteration of Square Enix's renowned MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, developed by Tencent, is notably mentioned. This list also includes a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, two Marvel-based games (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile game based on Dynasty Warriors 8.
While rumors of Tencent's involvement in a Final Fantasy XIV mobile adaptation circulated last month, neither company has officially confirmed the project.
According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad's August 3rd X (formerly Twitter) post, the FFXIV mobile game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, Ahmad emphasized that this information is based on industry speculation and lacks official confirmation.
Given Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market, this potential partnership aligns with Square Enix's declared strategy of expanding its flagship titles, including Final Fantasy, to multiple platforms. This multiplatform approach was announced by Square Enix earlier in May, signaling their intention to aggressively pursue broader market reach.
