Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has reached a remarkable sales milestone, with 2 million copies sold within just 12 days of release. This marks a significant increase from the 1 million units sold in the first three days after launch.
It's important to note that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was a day-one release on Game Pass, alongside Bethesda's Oblivion Remastered. Achieving such sales figures under these conditions is a major accomplishment for French developer Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive.
"We've been amazed to see so many of you embark on this journey," shared the development team in a social media post. "Experiencing every moment, every emotion, and every discovery right alongside you.
"To those who are just starting: welcome.
"Tomorrow awaits."
When Bethesda unexpectedly released The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered simultaneously with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, many expected one title to overshadow the other. Surprisingly, both games found success in the market.
According to Kepler Interactive, rather than negatively impacting Clair Obscur, the release of Oblivion actually benefited the game by generating increased interest in the RPG genre as a whole.
Matt Handrahan, Senior Portfolio Manager at Kepler Interactive, explained to The Game Business last week: "We recognized that Expedition 33 had its own distinct identity. Throughout my experience in the press, I've observed that Western-style RPGs and Japanese-style RPGs typically attract different audiences. I know many players who enjoy Elder Scrolls games but might not play Final Fantasy, and vice versa.
"Additionally, by the time of our launch, we had built substantial momentum and felt confident in our ability to stand alongside major releases. Factors such as our pricing strategy and Game Pass inclusion gave us assurance that we would generate significant interest. The outcome exceeded our expectations, and being released near Oblivion didn't negatively impact us. In many respects, I believe it helped focus attention on high-quality RPGs that week, getting everyone discussing and thinking about the genre."
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has performed so well that French President Macron has publicly congratulated the development team. Don't miss our essential guide for key information before starting your adventure.
