by Andrew Apr 21,2025

The final two updates for Motion Twin and Evil Empire's acclaimed roguelike, Dead Cells, are now live, marking the end of a remarkable journey of continuous updates that began in 2018. Dubbed Clean Cut and The End is Near, these updates are sending Dead Cells off with a bang, introducing a wealth of new content to the game.

Ironically, the only significant criticism Dead Cells faced was when the developers announced the cessation of free updates. However, the community's response does little to overshadow the incredible support the game has received over the years, with numerous weapons, gear, enemies, and more being added consistently.

Clean Cut and The End is Near don't just close the chapter; they do so with flair. Each update brings two new weapons, such as the giant Sewing Scissors and the Misericorde, alongside new gameplay modes like Speedrun and Boss Rush DIY. These additions are sure to excite both veterans and newcomers alike.

Additionally, players can look forward to 40 new heads, a variety of new enemy types, and an innovative NPC that allows you to change your head's appearance on the fly. While Dead Cells transitions to focusing on long-term quality-of-life improvements as the developers move on to new projects, these final updates ensure there's plenty of fresh content to keep players engaged for a while longer.

Undead cellsIt's understandable that some fans were disappointed to see the end of free updates after such a generous half-decade of content. Yet, with ongoing bug fixes and quality-of-life enhancements, Dead Cells is poised to remain a beloved title in the roguelike genre for years to come.
