Guillermo del Toro's lifelong fascination with Frankenstein rivals even the creature's creator. A recent Netflix preview showcased a first-look image of Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein in del Toro's highly anticipated adaptation. While a trailer won't be released until summer, the image offers a glimpse into the project del Toro has nurtured for decades.
"This film has been a part of my life since childhood—for 50 years," del Toro shared in a video message, as reported by Variety. "I've pursued this adaptation for 20 to 25 years. Some might even say I'm obsessed with Frankenstein." He playfully gestured to his extensive collection of Frankenstein memorabilia, a testament to his long-held passion.
Del Toro also revealed brief footage, showing Isaac's Victor Frankenstein in a confrontation with Mia Goth, portraying an aristocratic character, and Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster—described as possessing "long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a glint of red in his eyes." This footage remains unavailable online.
Del Toro eloquently expressed the profound connection he feels to the story: "Over the decades, the character has fused with my soul; it's become an autobiography. It doesn't get more personal than this."
The director's dedication is undeniable. The journey to bring this Frankenstein to the screen has been remarkably long and complex, a testament to the project's significance to del Toro.
