Rockstar's latest update to Grand Theft Auto 5, known as GTA 5 Enhanced, hasn't been warmly received by the Steam community since its release in early March. Launched on March 4, the game has garnered a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam, with only 54% of the 19,772 reviews being positive. This is a stark contrast to the original GTA 5 on Steam, which, though unlisted at Rockstar's request and thus not visible in search results, boasts a 'very positive' rating.
Interestingly, GTA 5 Enhanced currently holds the title for the lowest-rated GTA game on Steam, surpassing even Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, which sits at a 66% positive review score. GTA 5 Enhanced offers a free upgrade for PC users of GTA 5, introducing features previously exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions of GTA Online. These include new vehicles and performance upgrades at Hao’s Special Works, animal encounters, and the ability to purchase a GTA+ Membership, alongside enhanced graphics and faster loading times. All existing PC players can upgrade for free and transfer their Story Mode and Online progress.

However, the upgrade process has hit a snag with account migration issues being the primary source of negative feedback. Many players have reported problems migrating their accounts, with some expressing strong dissatisfaction. One player noted, “ ‘The GTA Online profile associated with this Rockstar Games account is not eligible for migration at this time,’ ” and vented frustration over the potential loss of nearly 700 hours of gameplay. Another review criticized the upgrade as an “objective downgrade” from the original version, indicating a preference for the legacy version until a new game is released.
Further grievances highlight Rockstar's decision to arbitrarily block some account migrations, with customer support offering little to no help. A player mentioned, "I can't migrate either of my two accounts," and labeled Rockstar's support as "completely useless," expressing reluctance to restart their progress for minor enhancements.
Despite these challenges, GTA 5 Enhanced remains popular on Steam, achieving a peak concurrent player count of 187,059 since its launch. However, the rocky reception has raised concerns among PC gamers about the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6, with fears that similar issues might plague its launch.
GTA 6 is slated for a fall 2025 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, leaving PC gamers waiting longer. In December 2023, a former Rockstar developer attempted to explain the delayed PC release, urging PC gamers to give the studio the "benefit of the doubt" regarding the controversial launch strategy.
