Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Coming to Nintendo Switch 2

by Emily May 01,2025

It wouldn't be a Nintendo console without a Zelda title, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is no exception, though the latest addition comes in an unexpected form. During today's Nintendo Direct, we were introduced to a new installment in the Hyrule Warriors series: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. This exciting new game is slated for release this winter.

Play*Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment* expands the Hyrule Warriors universe by focusing on the characters from the ancient history segments of *Tears of the Kingdom*. This includes not only Zelda but also Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. The game narrates Zelda's journey after she travels back in time, where she allies with the last remaining Zonai—Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia—to battle Ganondorf and his forces.

The trailer showcased some of the unique abilities of these champions, including Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda wielding her magic, Rauru brandishing a striking sword-spear, and a brief glimpse of other Sacred Stone wielders in action.

This marks the third entry in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which was a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity was particularly notable for its storytelling, which, despite being tied to Breath of the Wild, took a delightfully unexpected turn. It received a 9/10 from us, praised as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish."
