Exciting news for fans of the beloved RPG series: Suikoden is making a return, albeit in a new form. Konami, in collaboration with MYTHRIL, has just announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a fresh mobile RPG set to launch on Android and iOS devices. The best part? It will be free to play. Although an official release date hasn't been disclosed, anticipation suggests a launch later this year.
For those unfamiliar, Suikoden has been captivating gamers since its inception in 1995. Developed and published by Konami and masterminded by Yoshitaka Murayama, the series draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, known as Suikoden in Japanese. Over the years, it has woven a rich tapestry of political intrigue, mystical True Runes, and the epic saga of the 108 Stars of Destiny. With 11 entries, including spin-offs, the last installment graced us in 2012. Now, rather than a direct sequel or a full revival, Konami is introducing the series to mobile platforms with Suikoden STAR LEAP.
What's in Store?
Suikoden STAR LEAP brings a fresh roster of characters while honoring the series' tradition of assembling 108 heroes. The game retains the classic Suikoden charm with its pixel art style, as you can see in the teaser trailer below.
The narrative centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes pivotal to the world's creation. The protagonist, Hou, the son of the village chief, experiences his first successful hunt, only to face a devastating attack on his village. Driven by the tragedy, Hou embarks on a quest to restore peace, accompanied by Hisui, his servant with a mysterious emotional suppression; Shirin, his childhood friend fueled by a strong sense of justice; and Shapur, a former general who now serves as a butler.
While the announcement of Suikoden STAR LEAP stirs excitement, it also sparks debate among the Suikoden community. Long-time fans have been eagerly awaiting a direct continuation of the series, and some express reservations about this new mobile gacha game.
We'll have a clearer picture once Suikoden STAR LEAP is released. In the meantime, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates.
