How To Unlock Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley
Starting a new game in Stardew Valley gives you the chance to adopt a cat or dog to keep you company on your farm. While initially limited to one pet per save file, the 1.6 update in early 2024 has opened the door to adopting multiple pets. To get started, you'll need to meet some in-game requirements.
First, you must max out your friendship level with your existing pet. Ensure you fill their water bowl daily with your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically. Additionally, pet them once a day; you'll know you've done it when a heart bubble appears above their head. Track their friendship progress in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.
Once their friendship meter is full, Marnie will send you a notice about adopting more pets from her shop, located south of your farm. If you've never adopted a pet, you'll still receive this notice at the start of Year 2.

After choosing your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to order Pet Bowls for each of them. These bowls not only provide water but also serve as their "home," preventing your friendship meter from dropping and ensuring your pets don't run away.
You can find Pet Bowls under the "Construct Farm Buildings" menu at Robin's shop. Each bowl costs 5,000g and requires 25 x Hardwood (harvested with a Copper Axe or better). It's wise to prepare these bowls before adopting your new pets to maintain your friendship levels.
For additional pet amenities, visit Marnie's Ranch to purchase decorative items like Doghouses for outdoor use and Cat Trees for indoor settings. While these items add charm to your farm, they don't affect your pets' friendship meters.
