Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice, Suggests New Evidence
Recent circumstantial evidence hints at a surprising new feature for the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons: the ability to function as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this mode by game developers remains uncertain, the possibility aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously accessed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has been a rich vein of Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." The "mouse soles" designation, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, strongly suggests the Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer mouse-like functionality.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, implying they are new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, appears large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not Nintendo's First Rodeo: Mouse Functionality in Handhelds
While a mouse-like controller mode is consistent with Nintendo's experimental approach, it's not unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transformable into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even provides a plastic piece to aid smooth surface movement.
The Legion GO also shares another rumored Switch 2 feature: magnetic rails for easy controller attachment. This similarity offers further intriguing parallels between the two devices.
