Nintendo Switch 2 Leak Teases Massive Storage Boost

Leaked GameStop SKUs Suggest Nintendo Switch 2 Will Support microSD Express Cards

Recent leaks point to the Nintendo Switch 2 supporting microSD Express cards, a significant upgrade from its predecessor's UHS-I interface. This suggests substantial storage improvements are coming with the new console.

The Switch 2's mass production reportedly began in late 2024, possibly as early as September, fueled by a surge of online hardware leaks throughout Q4 2024. Adding to this, early January 2025 saw the leak of GameStop SKUs for unannounced Switch 2 accessories. These SKUs, originally posted by Reddit user Opposite-Chemistry96, list "Switch 2 Exp Micro SD Card" options in 256GB and 512GB capacities. This strongly indicates microSD Express support.

A Massive Speed and Capacity Boost

The current Switch uses UHS-I microSD cards, achieving practical transfer speeds around 95 MB/s. In contrast, microSD Express, leveraging the NVMe protocol, boasts speeds nearing 985 MB/s—a roughly 900% increase.

Feature UHS-I microSD Express
Transfer Speed ~95 MB/s ~985 MB/s
Max Capacity 2TB 128TB

MicroSD Express also offers a dramatic capacity increase, jumping from 2TB to a potential 128TB. GameStop's leaked internal pricing shows the 256GB Switch 2 card at $49.99 and the 512GB card at $84.99.

The leak also includes SKUs for a standard Switch 2 carrying case ($19.99) and two "deluxe" cases ($29.99). While these are likely unofficial accessories, their appearance adds to the mounting evidence. Nintendo has committed to revealing the Switch 2 before the end of its fiscal year (March 31, 2025), leaving just a few months for the official announcement.
