If you’re a gamer, you've likely encountered the challenge of playing vertical arcade games on your phone and found the experience less than satisfactory. A modder named Max Kern has devised a solution with his new Tate mode mini controller, designed to address this issue. But the question remains: does it really solve the problem?
Most controllers are tailored for landscape mode, similar to those used on a Switch or Steam Deck. However, classic vertical shooters and retro games often require holding your phone in portrait mode, much like scrolling through Instagram.
Max Kern took matters into his own hands by creating a tiny USB-C gamepad specifically for portrait-mode gaming, known as Tate mode. This compact controller connects directly to your phone’s USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or extra batteries.
The Tate Mode mini controller was constructed using a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, with the case and buttons 3D-printed via JLCPCB. If you're interested in building one yourself, Max has provided a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

What’s Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller?
The controller uses the GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. This versatility is impressive for such a compact device.
However, the setup might strain the USB-C port, as the gamepad supports part of the phone's weight. Users would need to hold both the phone and controller to prevent potential damage to the connector over time.
On Reddit, opinions are mixed, with some users admiring the innovation while others express concerns about potential hand cramps and discomfort. It's worth noting that calling it a product might be a stretch, as it's more of a DIY project. Max has generously shared all the necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and Github.
